Dark screen

I know that my laptop is not a television but sometimes I use the BBC Iplayer to catch up on
programmes I have missed but some are so dark that they are almost impossible to see,
some emails with video attatchments are also very dark is there any way I can turn up the
brightness, my laptop is a Packard Bell running windows XP.
