how do i put a curly mathematical x into a publisher document?

Dunno. But as an alternative you could try Alt+0215 to get a ×. Note how it's raised up and slightly smaller compared to the lower case letter x. ×××xxx×××xxx

thanks for trying but really i need a curly algebra x.
I have a font called CurlzMT and the x is a curly one
Seems to be a small x in italics.... <i>x x x </i> it wont show here but try it in Word
Use a lower case Greek letter chi. Change the font to 'Symbol'. With the number lock on (which it usually is by default), hold down the Alt key and type 0099 on the numeric keypad (not on the number keys above the the letters). Release the Alt key and your 'curly x' will appear.

You may have the font Palatino Linotyope on your computer -if so, type alower case x and italicise it.
