We have a Red 19" Widescreen TV with integrated freeview. This works fine and all programmes fill the screen. However when we switch to the DVD player which is plugged into a scart socket and plays on the AV channel two black bars appear on the left and right making the viewable area the old 4:3 shape. So if you then play a widescreen dvd, it puts bars above and below so you only see a small section in teh centre of the screen when the picture should fill the whole thing. The bars seem imposed by the TV rather than the DVD player as when you set the DVD player to widescreen, it fills the 4:3 bit in the middle and makes everyone look tall and thin. Currently we watch DVDs on 4:3 letterbox setting but this means a there is a huge black border. It is really annoying!!! If anyone knows how to make the TV show AV input in widescreen (full screen) mode, I'd be very grateful.

Your DVD player should have a setting which sets the aspect ratio to be used for the TV output; make sure that that is set to 16:9 not 4:3.

It does, but that just makes it fill the 4:3 section of the screen. the bars on the side are imposed by the TV not the DVD player.
Is it not possible to set the TV to "AUTO" when relating to screen dimensions???
I would have thought that it would change automatically to suit the picture shape being transmitted!!
