Help getting USB on printer recognised on laptop

Cannot get my All-in-one 3250 HP series printer to connect with my laptop, the laptop does not seem to be picking up the USB connection, I have Windows Vista Basic, it was working OK the last time I used the printer but now I cannot print or scan from my laptop.
Can anyone tell why this is happening and how to fix it?
