I have managed to disable Messenger on my PC,is their a way to rempve it totally along with it's annoying icon?

Go to start...run...type msconfig...go to startup items..find the box for msmessenger (or suchlike), uncheck the box...restart machine. bob's your mum's brother...

All very well, but use Outlook express and Internet explorer and the blooming thing will start up again!  

 

The only foolproof way I've found to stop it starting up by itself is to disable the messenger service in the services list and then nobble the registry entries for Windows messenger.

 

There is also an executable available on the web that does much the same thing for you - all you'd need to do is double click on the icon after downloading the program.  Try this one: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm

I renamed the messenger directory in program files (had to do this in Safe Mode as I recall) and hey presto...it doesn't start !
