can I use an external dvd writer with a laptop with only 1.1 usb and only 850 proccessor ?

the processor shouldnt be a problem, but the USB 1 might be. It might not be able to keep up with the writer. For a disk to burn successfully the writer needs a constant flow of data, or youll get a buffer under-run error and the disk will be ruined. One way you could get round this would to burn the disc at a slower speed and close all other applications, and that should be ok.
