is there a way of saving an album in your i tunes library without putting it onto the ipod?

yes - you just need to put the cd in, put it in itunes in the normal way. Then you need to "untick" next to each song in your library that you don't want on your ipod. next time you plug in your ipod to update it will update only ticked songs
