Well squarebear I did what you told me to and the laptop has not given up yet. Just run a disk optimization test and it is still coming back with File system errors consider running chkdsk. I just typed chkdsk under the run test and it is showing the corrupt files there something about 128, goes so quickly cannot write it all down.
Any other ideas that I could try. As soon as the snow has gone, but seems not likely to be anytime soon, I will be going out to get a new desktop, but until then am a bit concerned that my laptop may be about to expire. Is this a serious problem or if not cured will the laptop work okay for a while long. It is a Sony VIAO FS215S about 5 years old, so not done too badly.
Ccleaner (or any other tune-up program) won't help with corrupt files, in fact if anything it could make it worse.
if the hard drive is starting to die you want to make the least changes possible to anything on it and concentrate on backing up the data while you still can.
