Hi. I recently bought a new audio CD from Ebay. It is a pre-recorded original from around the late 80s. I have quite a decent high end hifi set up, but the CD plays very quietly. If i were to rip the CD to my computer, and burn it to a new CD-R, can I adjust the settings so that the playback will sound better / louder than the original?

Yes, using a wave editor application like goldwave. Google should bring up a list of them.
Louder, yes

Better, not necessarily, you can't add quality to it, if it's a low quality recording to start with then you will just end up with a louder bad quality recording.
