Google keep changing their criteria to prevent people "buying" their way to the top.

If there was an answer to this question, then everybody would be at the top of Page 1

I always thought it was down to good programming. If not what is it?
If you change a page, the Google web crawler will detect the update ... so constantly update the site.

Get lots of hits (Catch22, I know), because the more people open pages on your site, the better.

To get noticed in the first place, search regularly for something exclusive to your own site, so the Google crawler detects activity.

How often does Google crawl looking for new sites?

The Google crawler scans the web a lot.

It doesn't really "crawl"

It can scan about 100,000,000 pages a second
Top if the list when you searched for what though?

If you made a single page titled "the purple cheese and elephant society" and then done a search on "purple cheese and elephants" it would be the top of the list!

Google relies a lot on how many links there are to your site from other sites, get a lot of links to your site then you will appear higher.

Also make sure all your pages have titles and all contain clearly readable text that includes any words that you think would be relevant for people searching for your site.

Sorry to say it still comes second for me in the search results! (I won't say no.1, it's been said enough on here!)
