sorry not sure if in right section and not really clued up on computers, so sorry if this question is idiotic. I have recently bought a laptop and when i go into word it is asking me for a product code. Does this mean my laptop does not include microsoft word and i need to purchase the software? help

No. This means that your laptop *does* include Microsoft Word, but it hasn't been activated.

Firstly, go back to the people from whom you purchased the laptop and ask them to give you the activation code for the copy of Microsoft Word that is installed on it. If they won't do that, ask them why the laptop you bought from them came with an unlicensed copy of Microsoft Word.
If you get no joy from that avenue, and you want to continue to use Microsoft Word, then yes you will need to buy a legal copy and use the activation code that comes with that.

If you check it out, you'll probably find that a 30-day trial version of Office was pre-installed on your machine- this is fairly common practice.

As has been said, Open Office is free (legally) and perfectly adequate for most home users.
However if you MUST have Word for some reason (work or college) then there is the Home and Student version for about £60 that can be installed on 3 computers.
