So I cannot move it so as to make a desktop icon by dragging the address bar as normal. The arrows do not appear on either side or top and bottom. Have tried rebooting but makes no difference. Thank you.

Do you just mean that the window is maximised?

If so either click on the button next to the close at top right of the window or (in XP at least) double click on the the titlebar.

No, have tried that but it just goes to 1" in the corner!

Window is normal size but cannot drag it anywhere so as to click on title bar and make an icon
What if you right-click on the button in the taskbar ? - that displays options for resizing the window...
ignore firefox for a minute

Right click on any empty part of the desktop, select new > shortcut

on the first screen type the web address you want the desktop shortcut to take you to (or copy and paste it from your web browser) and click next. On the next screen type a name you want to call the shortcut and click finish.

You now have a shortcut on your desktop for that page (though I have never worked out why people want to do this, why not just add the page to your bookmarks)

I don't have that option Chuck, nor can I copy and paste from the address bar. It was ok til 2 days ago.
