If you are talking of reliable information, then a .gov site is more reliable because it is a government website. They can crash just as much as a .com or .co.uk website though.

thanks, but i don't understand. why is a government website more reliable. i wsn't specific in my question. thanks

Hi Jade

I'm only guessing, but I would assume that a government website is held on a secure server in some government building, with very good protection, firewalls,  while most .com and .co.uk websites are held on servers elsewhere (i.e not their own).

Jade, do you mean that the info on it is more reliable or just that the service/security is more reliable?

dot-gov sites are only permitted to be owned by government organisations eg councils or govt departments. Similarly, only schools can have a dot-sch domain. These domains are controlled by Nominet in UK. When it comes to getting your domain hosted, most hosting companies are not set up to cope with the unusual domain names. So certain companies have made good business by providing secure server to host dot-gov domains where these can't be hosted by the government department itself. They try their best to avoid hack attacks. crashes and down time as the customers ie govt departments will stay with them and pay them well but only if they are reliable. Hope this helps Jade
