Goofy - don't know if you've solved the problem yet, but sometimes it's easier to get the whole article written out, then do all then enhancing [spelling, punctuation, layout etc] afterwards.
My daughter often had similar problems, it's so easy to get bogged down in which font, size & style. One thing I always found useful was showing the printing marks [paragraphs, tabs, soft returns etc,] usually displayed by clicking on the ¶ button on your toolbar - or in word options if you have word 2007.
