phone bills & totalling them up

we get an itemised bill for daughter's mobile, is there an "easy" way of sorting it out like the how many calls to the same number etc.

I did start using a excel pivot table and got lost. Guess I'm looking a quicker way of summarising it, without spending ages on it. The bill is quite straightforward, just 6 columns showing:

"Date Time Type/Destination Number Usage  £
"


It's really to show her how many calls & to who, plus how much that costs us! Thanks

You clearly seem to have the data into an MS Excel table format already?
From there, you could simply use the Data - Sort function, sorting on the column that contains the Destination Number - that segments the data by number, not Date, then Time.
From there it is easy to sub-totalise blocks of data above that contain the same destination number.

Yes you can sort by the field you want to subtotal on. But the easiest way to get the subtotal is to filter first by the field you want the subtotal of (In this case £ col) and then choose ALT and = on your keybard which produces the =SUBTOTAL function. The arg type should default to 9 which is SUM. Examples contained in training manual at http://www.mousetrain...training-courses.html for 2003 and 2007 version.

Hi, Sure you've had this answer already, but here goes. Not sure which version of Excel you're using, but if it's 2007/2010:

Make sure there are no totally blank rows or columns in your block of data (just title at top of column is OK), and the titles at the top must only take up a single row. As long as you follow these rules you can safely use any option on the DATA tab. Now make sure you are only selecting ONE CELL in your data before you select any option - this is also important! If you now click the DATA tab FILTER icon (looks like a funnel), you will get little triangles beside each title. I bet this is all the help you will need now. You can sort into order - like same nos grouped together, and filter to only show a certain number etc. Using the filter drop-down triangles should now be the solution to your problem. You could also try using the DATA tab SUBTOTALS icon - but you must first sort your data into telephone number order - this way you can ask to get a sub-total for each number called.
