what is windows service pack 2, how can i stop install update

i remember i had indows service pack 2 before oon old computer, after it was installed my computer ran slow and had problems , on my new system its asking me to install it in updates. should i go ahead , i dont even know what its for

But these service packs can have conflicts with other programs which means that they might cause problems for your system and may be quite hard to track down e.g. when I installed SP3 on my laptop it kept freezing after only a minute following each boot up which meant that there was so little time to try to find out what was happening. Eventually there seemed no choice but to rebuild my machine (in terms of programs) starting with the recovery disks and installing the service pack as the very first action. A right pain that was! (Eventually turned out to be a conflict with the firewall I was running so changing that sorted it out).
