Today I have started my computer only to find that some of my 'Word' files have, without my altering them, ended up in bold and italics. To make matters worse I cannot change this by highlighting and clicking on the bold or italics icon. In some cases the text is in italics but the icon is not even showing that the italics option is in use. Also all the text on the internet is in italics - very irritating as it is hard to read.

I have an assignment due in next Tuesday for Open University and for once I am doing well for time, except that is all in italics and bold now too! Help! The text I am writing here is affected too. Is it some virus that has got under my substantial Norton defences? Any advice gratefully received.

Is this just on the screen? What are they like when you print on paper?
Might you have inadvertently switched on "Track changes"?

Thanks for the suggestion and link Mark, I've checked it out and it's not track changes.

Vagrant - it is both on the screen and when printed.

Thanks for your help, it is appreciated v much!

Well, you don't use Word to access the Internet, so this would seem to indicate the problem is not with Word, but with you installed fonts.
Here's an article on how to repair you fonts (second option is quickest)

I think your suggestion Rojash, is very possible. I did try running system restore to the previous days' restore point, but it said there had been no system changes. I then tried to run it back to the day before that, but it said the same. I'm not sure how that could be, given that the problem started yesterday - not today as I said ( my brother in law informs me now that he had the same problem yesterday). However I don't think there is any harm in trying to restore the fonts and see if that works. Thanks a lot for the suggestion.
