what is this and its purpose? do i have to connect it to my macbook at anytime? any info would be most welcom.

Ethernet is a wired communications connection. It is used to connect and communicate with networks and/or other computers. You do not need to use it if you are not connecting to a network or other computers. If you are using the internet then your choice is to connect via wireless connections (which is probably standard in your Macbook) or by connecting an an Ethernet cable between your laptop and the router connecting to the internet
