When I turned on my laptop this morning, the screen had a messgae stating that "there were many web browsers and that I should choose one" I immediately cancelled this message but it has left a shortcut on my desktop "browser choice"!!!!!! Has anyone got any idea where this has come from? is is safe? I cant find any way of deleting it in programmes? Any answers would be much appreciated.

Microsoft have been forced (by an EU directive) to offer all users a choice as to what browser they have installed, you have just been given that choice, just select the browser you normally use, you can use the shortcut on the desktop to change your mind at any time and select a different browser.
You can have multiple browsers anyway - I use Mozilla but I don't have a browser in my start up menu so I make my choice when I get to the desktop.

You can delete this very easily.

Cheers for that, I got my suspicious head on and thought it might be something dodgy!
You need to log into reality sometimes and check out the news ;-)

I tend to forget all too often.

It's all a nonsense anyway. It's not as if folk weren't able to opt for the browser of their choice anyway, but why would they risk another if they are happy with the free one they got from MS with the O/S ?

I've not seen the screen, possibly because I checked out the update it wanted to install, and cancelled out of it. Didn't seem to try again.
I recommenf 'Opera'

Aren't all browsers free?

The one you get with MS explorer has problems (or had) with a number of applications.
