I've got the above, what i'd like to know is how do i stop anyone else apart from my household getting access to the internet from via my router - as in neighbours or people outside the house

Set up the standard password protected wireless protection during the set up procedure
While setting up you will be offered two types of password encryption WEP and WPA. For a personal router most people prefer the WEP option. Just click on that and you will be given a space to enter your password. Be very careful to write it down somewhere, so that you can re-enter it at a later date if needed.
WEP is VERY easily broken and it is best to go for WPA.

WEP will stop the casual person but WPA will stop almost everyone.
