DVD/Laser Disc comparisions (and future Media)

I remember back in the sixth form my old electronics teacher told us he preferred to watch his movies in the old (and big) Laser Disc format rather than the DVD format (bearing in mund that this was the late 90s and DVD was only just released  mainstream) I could recall he said the picture quality is better on Laser Disc.

Can anyone ellaborate on this quote? Is the picture really more better or was he having us on? How much memory doe's a LD carry compared to a DVD?

And regarding future media storage, Can anyone shed any light with Sony's Blu-Ray Discs and compare it with the forthcoming DVD-HD?
