The drives in external DVDs are exactly the same as the internal one they just have a transformer to reduce the electricity and an IDE to usb/firewire convertor (if they are IDE drives) or a standard SCSI adaptor if they are SCSI. It is getting the IDE to USB/firewire adapters which is the hard thing. I would buy a broken external DVD writer from eBay and replace the drive with an internal one. Actually, Lacie may do conversion kits.
Maplin provide external cases with power supply that will accept an internal drive.
Maplins tend to be expensive for this type of product. Plenty of new ones are available from trusted sellers on Ebay. Look at this one for example:-http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cate gory=167&item=5154498489&rd=1
