In the 60's, the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was set up in the US to provide the ability to link radar stations nationwide. Over the years, this was refined, until the TCP/IP was developed (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). In 1993, Tim Berners-Lee, working at CERN invented the World Wide Web.

>I'd have said Tim Berners-Lee.
No he did not.
You have to realise that there are two distinct components - there is the INTERNET and the WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW).
Tim Berners Lee invented the Word Wide Web (that is browsers, URL addresses, hyperlinking, the HTML language and all of that)
But the INTERNET existed long before the web and browsers came along. The internet includes all the networking that makes the internet work (the cables and computers and technology that all link together to make the INTERNET)
Tim Berners Lee added his technology ON TOP of the existing internet (which had already been around for years before he invented the web)
Tim Berners Lee invented much of what we all use today (Web Browsers etc) but there are still a lot of things you can do on the internet that dont involve browsers (email, ftp and so on) that he did NOT invent.
Note you can use the INTERNET without using the WEB, but you can use the WEB without using the INTERNET.
