If you can charge them through the printer, try doing it with a separate charger and make sure that the switch (if it has one?) is set to NIMH and not NiCad.
Some chargers can also be used to dis-charge the batteries fully before re-charging.
I bought a small (2 x AA or AAA) charger from the local £1 shop this week which charges through the computer USB at 1.65 volts ( much higher than other chargers I have which only charge at 1.2 or 1.4 volts) and it works very well.
I have used AA Lithium batteries in my camera. mouse and portable music player for years but they do eventually give up the ghost and need replacing.
Just bought some 2800 mah ones from Amazon which seem very good and very reasonably priced.
Hope this helps.
