When you connect, you need 2 cables connected, one which has two screw things either side of the connector which im assuming is the one you have already used and a cable with a red connector and one with a white connector, these are called auxiliary cables and provide sound. you will know if you have these.
It will look like this, the red and white go to TV, the other end goes to PC.

Assuming you've used the 15pin VGA cable ( http://vgatodvicable..../07/vga-connector.jpg ) then you also need to connect the headphone/speaker out on the laptop to the PC audio in on the TV.

normally that would require one of these leads. http://www.amazon.co....ug-1-2M/dp/B00077DC3S

But check the input type one the back of the TV as it may be different.
I wondered where benny had gone.......
Yeh, havent been on for a while, been busy at work, i wondered if anyone would notice i hadn't been on for a while, im touched, lol. :-) hopefully i shall be keeping up with answerbank from now on. :-)

Cheers...it's great typing on a 42 inch TV :-)

I don't think we have the right leads though...but still. Least I know.....
As I said, check the input on the TV before buying anything, most PC audio inputs on TVs are 3.5mm jack (headphone type connectors) as I linked to, but some are twin phono plugs like benny linked to.

also if it's a plasma be very careful about leaving the same image on the screen for long, because you will get screen burn. if it's a LCD nothing to worry about.
Please do benny......you have been missed :-)
Awww, bless ya. i've missed coming on. :-(
did you tell that boss of yours to stick it yet benny?

Chuck...excuse my ignorance. How do I know if it's a plasma TV?
put the make and model into google ummmm......
It will weigh half a ton and get very hot after long use.....

Or just stick the model number into google :)

screen burn is something to be very worried about on plasma screens when used with computers, it would only take a few hours of displaying the same menus at the top of the screen for it to start to get screen burn.

It doesn't weigh half a tonne and doesn't get hot....

The serial number doesn't come up on google....

My son is doing my hair at the moment....ouch!
