I am trying to sync my iphone to my laptop (ie transfer info from the phone into itunes on the laptop) however it seems to want to sync the info from the laptop to the phone instead of the other way round.

I'm sure this is a simple problem so what am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Nope, you're not doing anything wrong, itunes is only designed to sync one way, your computer to the iphone, not back again.

There are several third party applications that claim to let you copy the music, films and photos back to the computer (not seen one that does contacts).

For example (I've not used this as I don't own an iPhone)

However, they will just let you copy the files back to the computer, you'll then have to reimport them into itunes.

But how can the 0ne-way thing be right Chuck?
I have downloaded and used apps etc on my phone and I wanted to back it up onto itunes - which I thought was the point of syncing?
When you plug in your iPhone and press sync, any purchases you have made on the iPhone, Music, apps etc will be pulled from the iPhone into the iTunes Library.

You are right, it cannot be one way.

Is this your first attempt at pairing the two after set up?
The above is assuming you set up the iPhone on the lap top. You can only work your phone from one Library. You need to sync it with the computer you set it up with.

If you are trying to get music purchased on the phone to another computer, you cannot do that by syncing.
