Old laptop - slow internet

Got a really carpy old laptop with XP on it. It fires up all right and opens programs fine but the internet connection is bizarrely slow. My ADSL down sync speed is reported as 6.8Mbps on the router stats page, and my other PCs can achieve 5.5+, whilst this particular laptop struggles to get 1.0Mbps. Upload isn't as affected but still pretty poor for some reason. Not running any P2P; Avast hasn't detected any viruses and Ad-Aware doesn't find any spyware. Since the other computers get a perfect connection I can't imagine I'm unwittingly part of a botnet, so what's up?

Actually I've noticed CPU usage maxes out when I run the speed test so maybe that's it.. seems a bit odd though as it's got 704MB (odd number I know..)

Sorry, just to clarify: I'm not a complete idiot. The CPU maxes out and it has 1500MHz. No idea why I mentioned the RAM.
How exactly is the laptop connected? wired, wireless?

If wireless is it a built in adaptor or a.n.other?

And lastly, what make and model is the laptop?
if it is fault in laptop you have to format once and then have a good antivirus., it may slow up your laptop.. if you tried this just try some internet speed accelerator which boost up the internet speed... you can use the speed test from here http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed-test/ they are giving unlimited free speed tests...
