HDD error on a Toshiba RD-XS25 DVD recorder.
5 Answers
Whenever I switch the DVD recorder on it displays 'HDD Error' then closes down again. Does anyone know of a way this can be fixed. Can I use my laptop to run a diagnostic and if so how do I do this? I have hours of recordings I do not want to lose. Can anyone help?

The HDD went broken in my Toshiba RD-XS25SE recorder. I tried to simply exchange it to a new one (same type, same capacity), but the device wouldn't accept that. After Toshiba support refused to help I decided to dig as long as I find a solution on my own. (That's why it is a HACK.)
After days spent with a hex-editor, I found a method to initialize any HDD (20GB, 40GB and 160GB tested) using a PC, so that the recorder offers to format and use it.
The procedure is not that simple, but if some of you show interest I'd create an easy-to-use PC-software to pre-format any IDE-HDD to be used in Toshiba RD-XS25SE.
To the recordings on the old HDD I would still need to do more research.
