Then transfer all unnecessary files to DVDs, memory sticks or an external hard drive.

PS: I've referred to video and music files because, for most home users, They're usually what consume most space on a hard drive. Photographs generally take up less space but, if you've got many thousands of them, you might also gain quite a bit of space by transferring them to external media. However unless you've been writing lots of really long novels, you won't gain much by transferring things like Word documents.

Unless the shortage of space isn't real (i.e. it's just an erroneous message) using the recovery disk will do no good whatsoever.
You could try 'degragging' the hard drive. That's meant to happen automatically under later versions of Windows but sometimes doing it manually can still help.
Instructions for Vista are here:

(It should be similar with other versions of Windows).

Deleting programs will save you almost no space (most programs are very small).
Video files are huge so try to get rid of them.
Maybe get an external hard drive and move personal files from your hard disk to the external drive.
Note that Windows does not like running with a full hard disk as it needs space for temporary files and temporary storage. You may well find Windows running slow if it cannot create this temporary space.
So it is very important you clear some space from your hard disk.

Also check there is not an "empoty" D drive on your computer.
Many computers nowadays come with the hard disk split into 2 partitions, a C: and a D: Many people do not realise they have a D: drive and their C: drive can fill up, while they have an empty D: drive.
Check in Windows "Computer" to see if you have a D: drive on your hard disk (note you D: drive MAY be your CD/DVD drive).
Maybe let us know what drive letters you have (C, D, E etc) and how big they all are.
