Making a backup to restore files

I had to use System Restore and now am being asked to make a backup file. I have tried twice but the job is never completed.

Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong and how to do what I am asked?

If possible, can you tell me in words of one or two syllables?

Firstly what OS are you using ? Until this known it is hard to make any suggestions
