However I note that the 'Five' group of channels are (unlike the BBC channels) encrypted. To the best of my knowledge you should still be able to view them as long as you've got a valid card in the box but the only way to be sure is to try it.

10.773GHz (which is what it should be if it's tuned in properly) is actually an Astra 2D frequency where Five has borrowed space on a BBC Fresat transponder for just that one channel from its portfolio. (Other members of the group, such as Fiver and Five US remain unavailable ).
The footprint for Astra 2D suggests that it should be possible to receive it in Ireland, so your suggestion is definitely well worth Mrs LB trying:
