I keep getting a pop-up from my free AVG.

It tells me to up-date my 'anti-virus free 2011' software.

There are 5 boxes, at the moment only one has a tick in it, that is Anti-virus protection. the 4 other boxes that are un-ticked are 'Stop hackers from entering your PC', 'Download and exchange files safely', 'Keep your Emails safe and block spam', '24/7 free technical support' then it gives me the opportunity to 'download your free support'.

If I was to do this it would apparently give me the same support as the 'Internet security 2011, recommended protection.

What is the catch, are they offering me a limited trial of 'Internet security 2011, after which I will have to subscribe?

That's not from your AVG, that's from a well-known piece of malware .
You need to install Malwarebytes Anti-malware, run it and get rid of this cr@p.

Hi, avg is sending out this update as I have recently installed it on my PC. There are 2 versions of it, the free and the pay for one. There is an option to get a trial version too but then you will have to pay at the end of trial. Just go to download.com if you want the free one and it installs in a few minutes with no junk attached. Just make sure you undo the ticks if you don't want the other things with it like google chrome, etc.
theshedman is talking bo11ox. It's malware that has been going around for ages. If you can see it then it is already on your machine. Download Malwarebytes, that should shift it.
Hi squarebear if you click on the link above rojash'es answer it gives you the link to the new version of AVG 2011, but if you go to download.com you can get it free.
No it doesn't. It takes you to a link to download malwarebytes. AVG 2011 and Anti-virus 2011 are not the same thing at all.
Ah sorry, the one ABOVE it. Sure, get AVG but that won't solve anotheoldgit's problem
I have AVG Squarebear and I have had the same as AOG it gives you the option to continue with Free version or to update to a subscribed version doesnt look like malware and googling it looks like they have released the 2011 version. I cant see any references to Malware could you advise please.
I have got AVG 2011 anti virus on my PC which is what the original question asked about and it was the free version. I also have malwarebytes and it doesn't pick up any malware from it.
In that case, my apologies as antivirus 2010 going back to about 2008 were all malware. Seems strange that AVG chose this name for their product.

Thanks for your answers so far.
rojash

I clicked on that link and it entered the file in a download box, when I clicked on this it told me that the file could contain viruses or malware, so I didn'y bother, what now please anyone?
If you want to download the new version just go to download.com and get it from there. All software from there is safe and bug free.
If you want a free copy of Malwarebytes, I would advise you download it from the official site here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Just click on this link if you ant the free version of AVG and click on the link just past the middle of the screen on the left hand side which says download now (4.09MB)

I have downloaded it and it works fine and it is free of charge, but you can upgrade to a better one if you wish this you have to pay for.I just have the free version,be carefull when you download it because if you click the wrong button you may choose the one that is not free.
Good luck
AOG,

regardless of if this warning is true or a hoax you should have malwarebytes on your computer anyhow, so download and install malwarebytes using squarebears links above, install it and then run it, let it do a full update and then run a full scan with it.

Once it has finished the scan reboot your computer and if you continue to get the warnings then upgrade to the latest version of AVG. do not under any circumstanses enter any payment details when upgraded, it is not needed for AVG! (and as there is still a element of suspicion about this being true AVG update)
"when I clicked on this it told me that the file could contain viruses or malware"
Yeah, well you'll find that it warns you about that for any program download.
The link I gave you is the correct one to download the genuine version.
Well this b*ggered up my computer at the beginning of the year, cos I clicked on it!
The link you have given rojash is the one for malwarebytes but I thought the original question was about AVG antivirus. If AVG is what he wants then the link I gave will be right, but if he wants malwarebytes as well then that can be had from the same site. download.com and cnet are the same place.
I downloaded the AVG 2011 version a couple of days ago- have run a AVG scan and a malware scan since and no problems were detected.

Sorry to be such a nuisance but I clicked on that link kindly provided by squarbear

Pressed download free version and up popped a page called Major Geeks, with Download Locations and recommended downloads, click here for system problems.
Help please, Where do I click

Will it be alright to down load the latest version of AVG while I still have the old version on my computer?
