desktop,tried to reinstall xp after corruption,would not fully load so bought neww disk.put disk in machine and i get the following.cpu and power fans work,two lights on front come on and stay on,button for restart not functioning and have to hold main button in to turn machine off.nothing comes on screen except brief resolution info.has i mentioned before there is no beep when first switching on

I think your best solution is to get some help from a friend or relative who knows about computers.

Boot only to Bios FIRST.
Set up bios .. one or two of those features are set in there. They can and do change occasionally.
