I tried to connect the laptop to the tv using a standard monitor (VGA at each end) cable but the tv screen was black.Anyone any suggestions as I thought this was the way forward? Thanks in advance.

Did you press the buttons on the keyboard (often Fn and F7) to send the picture to the TV?

Thanks VHG but F7 does nothing and there's no Fn!
There should be a blue Fn key near the bottom left on your laptiop. What make and model is it?

OK found the Fn key,will try again.

Still no go I'm afraid.It is a Toshiba EL10-142.
F1 Key, or the key with 2 pictures of tv screens on it.
