Thunderbird timing out

For the last half hour or so I cannot download mail from thunderbird keep getting timed out message can anyone help please

It may be you have a huge or corrupted email choking the mailbox at the server.
Most mail severs have web interface where you can check your mail with a browser. Take a look at it there and delete anything odd. Keep deleting until Thunderbird starts working you will know one of the deleted messages was the problem.
Get them back from the bin until you find the one that choke its.
Otherwise maybe you have a connection or server problem.
