IPOD Touch Restore

Putting some music on my ipod touch i was offered the chance to upgrade the software on the actual ipod. clicked yes and after some time a message came up saying it couldn't update it. Was left with the image of the usb cable and the itunes shortcut on the ipod. Tried to restore it, no luck, keeps saying cannot restore have tried different usb ports and cables, and another computer - still wont restore. Have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it to no avail. Has anyone got any ideas what else I can do now? I am not near an Apple shop Thanks

Have tried this but cannot get past image of the usb cable and the itunes shortcut

if the hard reset (hold down the power button and the home button for about 10secs) doesn't work then you may have to just wait for the battery to run out.

(though I've also heard stories that the iphone at least sometimes resets ok when plugged into a mac instead of a PC)
