hi folks, i'm running xp. i've got my old smaller h/drive running at the moment because the newer big h/d has died. it's missing a start up / boot file for xp. i can access it via booting on old h/d and looking on the 'my computor' it's listed and accessable.
can i use the old h/d to help fix the prob. they both have the same xp disc installed on them.
cheers, mark.

Doesn't the drive have to have an MBR (Master Boot Record) attached to it??
Try googling for MBR for Win XP and see if it helps.
Boot into recovery console and issue the fix boot command. Search on net for details.
Get EasyBCD
Use the Recovery console to repair the Master Boot Record.
First disconnect you old drive and also ensure that the machine is configured (in the BIOS) to allow booting from CD.

Boot from th XP CD

When prompted, press the letter R for Recovery Console.

When Recovery Console starts, it will prompt you to enter a number corresponding to the Windows XP installation that you need to repair. Assuming that there is only one XP installation on the disk, enter "1"

Enter the Administrator password.

At the Recovery Console command prompt, type fixmbr and then verify that you want to proceed.
