if you use firefox you can install the add block plus add-on which will stop the adverts being loaded, that will get rid of some of the extra loading time, it's not feasible to get rid of all of the "extra sites" though as the page just wouldn't look right or work right.

A web page isn't a single document, like a Word document is. Instead, it's made up of lots of different components, which can be drawn from multiple sources. AB's pages make calls upon data from lots of different places, much of which is related to advertising.
You can significantly speed up the way that AB loads by disabling the calls that AB makes to advertising sites. To do so, you need to use Firefox as your browser:
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
and install the AdBlock Plus add-on:
https://addons.mozill...S/firefox/addon/1865/
(When you install it you'll be asked to select at least one subscription. Don't be put off - it doesn't involve any payment! Just select 'EasyList')
Other sites with heavy advertising content will then also load much faster.

Wasn't there when I started either :)
As Chris says, are you sure you've subscribed to a list with add block?
if you click the little arrow next to the red ABP icon up in the top right corner and select preferences, then click on the filter menu and select add new filter subscription, chose the one that says easylist (English) from the list of filters and add it, click ok a few times and see if that helps
