I was doing a file search on my C/Drive of files over 50MB as I noticed that my hard drive space had dropped by 5GB over a few days. I found out that the reason was because I was messing about with a DVD and some of the files called VOB files stayed on the computer so I deleted them.

However I also notice that there are several files called HDMP files and they range in size from 80MB to 200MB. They seem to be something to do with firefox and say something like firefox.exe in local settings. Do I need these HDMP files or can I delete them?

Are you finding these in the System Health folder?
Common problem with problematical executables/programmes.
.hdmp files are dump files generated (usually) when something crashes to help with error reporting etc ...

As they are just used for debugging, you can delete them.

Albags I found them when I was searching for large files on my C Dive, I found them be accident. Two examples of the files are C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\WER2c7d.dir00 and C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp\WER8535.dir00 and there are about 6 or 7 of them. Naz, are you sure they won't cause any problems if I delete them? bibblebub, cheers I'll check that link.
You can definitely safely delete them. In fact, as they are in your temp folder, they would get deleted by default if you ran a disk cleanup - which (as I guess you were searching for large files because you want to free up some space) is probably a good thing to do anyway.

rojash I went into disk clean up option and it showed that I could get back 18MB but these HDMP files add up to 900MB and there's no mention of them in the clean up.
Anything in a Windows Temp folder can be deleted following a successful boot to desktop. Some may be locked tho.
Get rid of them .. : )
You could also find out what program is causing their creation.
Try Event Viewer to start with.

Albags I assume it is firefox causing them as the name in the search results is firefox.exe.hdmp

Also, what does boot to desktop mean?
