So I don't hijack the thread about emails, i'll enlighten you about the pros and cons of facebook on this thread, and anything anyone else wants to add can be added.
Pro's, you can pick your security setting so only people you've accepted as your friend can see what you've written, pictures you've uploaded etc. You can search for long lsot friends and family and add them as a friend. Anyone you don't want to have contact with, you can block them, so they can't even see you have a profile, let alone add you as a friend and see your information.
cons; it's quite addictive. There are loads of games (might be a good thing) but they take over some peoples lives a bit too much.

I can't see the point of it, personally. I don't want the world to know my business. I opened an account and other people's friends are asking to be my friend. If I want to get in touch with someone, I phone them or email them. I'm not interested in posting the minutiae of my life, or sharing photos with the world. I don't get it at all.
