I'm going to kill my computer.

Its really effing me off. Every now and then, when I go to click on something the blue twirly thing on the tab goes round and round for ages and the page does not load. I then try to click on refresh which also doesn't work so I sit here for a about half a minute waiting for something to happen and it doesn't. Then when I go to click anywhere on the page the screen goes a white colour but I can see stuff underneath it. At the top in the black bit it says "(not responding)".

Any ideas before I kick it?

Firefox loads pages far faster than IE does (especially if you use the Adblock Plus add-on), and it's far easier to customise to your personal requirements. (e.g. by adding a button to instantly save a Youtube video to your hard drive). It's also generally regarded as being more stable and more secure than IE.

However it's greatest advantage is that it's easy to fix when things go wrong. (Simply re-installing Firefox, on top of itself, quickly fixes almost every possible problem that can occur with it, without losing your bookmarks or personal settings). Trying to solve IE problems can be an absolute nightmare!

I'm happy with IE too - none of the issues mentioned on my system - on an Asus pc which I really like. I would do a clean out of those temp files......

There is also some methods of using the computer, in addition to the configuration of the computer, regularly anti-virus, cleaning up litter, choose the faster network, all of which will accelerate for your computer.

Download, install, update and run in safe mode a full scan of the free program malwarebytes.

Start/Run msconfig. Select the Services and Startup tabs. Search on the net for each ticked item and see if it can be unticked.

Update your anti-virus scanner and run a full scan.

As been mentioned, download the latest version of firefox. View your addons and plugins. Search on net to see if they can be disabled.

I started with Sinclair computers in the early 1980s and have used I.E. for the last 11 years. Touching wood, I never have any trouble/problems with it.
Tried Firefox some time back and didn't like it. It's a matter of personal opinion so I also fall about laughing when people try to tell me how good Firefox is.
Maybe it's them that can't handle I.E. properly????

Whenever PC Guard runs a scan it takes over 20 hours to complete.

My brother tried to sort it out a few weeks ago. He's acomputer engineer/networker or something like that anyway. I'm going to ask him to take a look at this thread to see if he can make any sense of the advice given as I don't know my @rse from my elbow. Lol

Oh and I tried using firefox but I just kept getting "firefox has stopped working" every 5 minutes and then it would close down.

No disrespect intended, Tigger, but considering that you have admitted that you don't know your A from your Elbow and have had trouble with both Firefox and I.E., I would kindly suggest that the main problem is YOU.
You wouldn't expect anyone to diffuse a bomb without some instruction, would you? but many people go to Comet, buy their first laptop and then wonder why it all goes wrong when they get it home.
I would suggest that you get your brother or some one else to give you a few lessons on what to do and, possibly more importantly, what NOT to do.
There are plenty of free lessons/computer classes available at libraries etc.
I hope you soon get your computer sorted out but I think it will be by the personal hands on approach.

I've been using computers at home and at work for the last 10 years so I'm not that incompetent. the A for the elbow bit was said as a bit of a joke.
