What type of file is .AMR? Its saved as a ringtone, which I made myself, on my Sagem phone. If I connected the phone to a computer, could it be converted to mp3?

According to this web-site..... http://www.fileformat.info/ext/a.htm
 which is an exhaustive list of extensions, .AMR does not exist! So it is probably something somebody just thought of using. Which leads me to ask, can people copyright file extension names?

I have some voice messages on my D500 that are saved as amr files.

Does anyone know how I can convert them to mp3 files to use as ringtones?
