When, for example, you're in Word 2007, is it possible to save a document as a .txt document?...if so, how?...I can't seem to find how. All I have in Save As is 'word document' which saves as .docx or 'word template' which I haven't tried or '97-2003' which saves as .doc and I need to save Word documents as .txt, but it's no good me cut and paste to Notepad, as Notepad doesn't seem to want to do what I want re formatting, etc...it seems to have a 'mind' of its own! Ta Muchly.

If you save as .txt you will not store much (or any) information about formatting. That is what .txt means - a plain text file.

Calibax, all I've got in the Save As drop down (apart from those mentioned) are 'open document text', 'pdf or xps' and 'other formats'. I'm gonna need a tinyurl for that link Mark! Gotcha Scot!

I can see a Plain Text option on my Word dropdown menu on 2007, woodelf, that would give you the .txt version.

Hi Woodelf.

I've just checked how to save a .txt file from Word 2007 on my PC. Here's how it looks to me:

From the button at the top-left of the screen, hover your mouse cursor over 'Save As' but don't click on it. What your screen reader isn't telling you is that hovering your mouse cursor there opens another menu, just to the right of where your cursor is. (i.e. move your cursor to the right to find it). The last option on that list is 'Other Formats', and that's where you need to click. Doing so opens a standard dialogue box for saving file, with a 'Save as type' box at the bottom of it. Clicking in that box, and then using the scroll wheel to run through the available options, allows you to select 'Plain text'.

Woodelf is blind. His screen reader can't recognise links which have been abbreviated by AB's server.

Chris, I don't have to hover, there is a drop-down menu against the "Save As" option - but I'm not sure whether woodelf would be able to see it on his screen reader.

Perhaps my post, by referring to 'hover', suggested that it's necessary to keep the mouse cursor in that position for some time. That's not the case because, as Boxtops states, the secondary menu (to the right of the first one) appears as soon as you put the cursor over 'Save as'. All I was trying to emphasize was that you DON'T click on 'Save As' itself.

Woodelf, a good friend of mine is registered blind, and he does almost everything with keystrokes rather than mouse clicks.

For Word, you could try Alt, F, A, Tab, Down arrow - that should drop down the list of available file formats. The one you need is Plain text (*.txt)

Many Thanks All, especially Chris as ever. I should say that I don't use the mouse at all, I use the keyboard throughout and after trying what you said Chris, keyboard-wise, Other Format was the one I needed, so I used the cursor keys to down arrow to Save As, right arrow to open the drop down and arrowed down to Open Format, hit Enter and then tabbed to Save As and used the down arrow to find the Plain Text option, which I then saved the file as - which of course Mark is the long way round to that which your friend suggested and now I can use the shortcut you gave; so Many Thanks Indeed for the combined help. I am incredibly indebted to you All!
