im left with the old cable broadband modem box and a load of wires etc

or are they largely useless to anyone else?

or should i keep them 'just in case'?

It is of no use to anyone because Virgin will have activated your new modem and de-registered the old one, so it will not work if you reconnect it. Therefore it is no use trying to sell it on ebay as you will only get a complaint from the buyer. When my modem was replaced by Virgin they told me to just sling the old one in the bin!!!
If it is metal you can put it out for the recycling men or the scrap merchant if he comes round your area.
