My OH is still in hospital and although I've managed to get him on the web with a dongle, he has just told me over the phone that because his hands are swollen he thinks he's locked himself out by typing the password incorrectly too many times.
Now he's a bit vague at the moment so is this possible and how can I get it back on for him when I go in tomorrow to see him, without a Control Panel? Thanks

First things first, what password are we talking about? Is it the machine's power-on password, is it the password to access the operating system, or is it a password into some other piece of software or system, maybe his online banking password?

What make and model of machine? What make and version of operating system?

Acer Laptop, don't know the model. Think it's Vista and it's the macine's power-on password.
Difficult to say without knowing the model...

It may be that the lock out is temporary, in which case all will probably be well soon.

Alternatively, it may be that you have to remove the battery from motherboard until the BIOS has reverted to its factory settings. Again, there may be a way of causing this without removing the motherboard battery.

The best thing to do would be to consult the manual. It's important to remember, though, that this lock out is designed to prevent unauthorised access to the machine e.g. it it had been stolen, so it's not supposed to be easy to bypass otherwise there would be little point in having it in the first place..
How will that help?
Well, 12 possible solutions to a question that is, at best, vague.
All the different ways in the world of resetting the Windows administrator password will not help in resetting the machine's power-on password...

Thanks Guys. My vagueness is because I haven't actually seen the laptop. My husband rang and told me and as he's got swollen hands so it maybe that he hasn't done irreparable damage. I'll be able to check it this afternoon.
