i have a toshiba satellite pro 4600 laptop which is only running 64mb of memory.  i want to buy a 256mb card but unsure how to ensure i get the right one.  Toshiba offered it for 111 but i reckon its gotta be cheaper somewhere else.

Firstly, you are quite correct not to buy from Toshiba - way too expensive when you can get an equivalent which will work just as well.

To check the spec. download something like PC Wizard  (free) which will tell you all you need to know. Important parameters are ; supported speed (in Nanoseconds nS), frequency (in MHz), type eg. DDR-SDRAM.

For that laptop I think you need PC100 SODIMM memory. You could look at the memory module that is already installed and get some information from the chips.

Try http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp and go through the wizard.
