Why can't I see emoticons on iphone

When I receive a text message with emoticons in, there not displayed properly, why is this and what can I do so I can see them. I can add them into my texts I send, but the recipient doesn't see them either?!

I have an LG cookie and if i go to 'insert emticon' only the codes come up such as :) so if i don't know what they code for i can't use them because i can't see the picture, but the majority of people i send them to say they can see the picture, not just the code . . .

Emoticons and their codings aren't standard between phones, so that it is likely that a message with an emoticon send from another manufacturer's phone or even a different model of phone, will not display properly on your iPhone. A message with an emoticon from your phone will display properly on another iPhone but may not be recognised by another manufacturer's phone e.g a Nokia
