Broadband Speed Constant Problem for Over A Quarter Of Users

More than one in every four UK broadband users are unhappy with the speed at which they can surf the internet, according to new research. A study from a leading comparison website firm found that close to four million consumers are unsatisfied with the coverage offered by their provider.

In terms of broadband speed, the UK ranks 17th in the world - 23 times slower than traffic in Japan. Head of communications at the firm commented that Ofcom should get involved and "force" firms to be more honest about the issue.

The research revealed the average broadband customer pays around £200 a year to receive a speed of 5 Mb/s but actually receives only 3 Mb/s while at the same time only 25 percent of all the users are unaware of the speed that they have signed up for and slightly more, 31 percent have absolutely no idea what speed they are actually receiving.

The 'speed demons' are the broadband companies still willing to let their customers to pay for an advertised broadband speed when they know full well it is impossible for them to receive it.

"It's like selling a Porsche that will only go as fast as a Reliant Robin," said the expert. The spokesman added that firms should not be advertising speeds that their service cannot match.

According to one financial report, replacing copper wires with fibre-optic cable could result in potentially unlimited speeds, but would mean digging up streets at an estimated cost of £15bn. However, the UK must keep up with broadband developments or it could stay in the slow lane.
