Dyson

Dyson is one of the most recognised brands in the world. Its main products are vacuum cleaners that use cyclonic separation. From the first upright vacuum cleaner launched in 1993 there is now a whole range of Dyson products including several types of upright and cylinder cleaner, washing machines and hand driers.

The founder, James Dyson, used centrifugal particle separation after finding that to restore suction, the dust bag in his vacuum cleaner needed to be replaced – even when it was not full. After a visit to a sawmill he took technology used for clearing the air of wood dust and applied it to the vacuum cleaner he had at home. It took 15 years and more than 5,000 prototypes before he perfected the design.

When the first Dyson DC01 vacuum cleaner was launched it became the best-selling cleaner in the UK within 22 months.

A Dyson cyclone works by employing cyclonic separation, which spins air at high speed. Dirt and dust are thrown out of the airflow and collected in the bin, not on a filter or in a bag. The clear bin on every Dyson vacuum is made of polycarbonate. The same material as riot shields and bullet-proof glass, it has extremely high impact strength.
