South Wales in July

Continuing my theme of "place in the UK and month of the year" I wondered if anyone could offer me a little advice.

I may be popping in to S.Wales (North of Cardiff) at some point in June for a indeterminable amount of time.

Phone signal: Is there any? What networks "work" around there? Ideally I'll be ignoring the time vortex I keep in my pocket, but sometimes there are real emergencies.

While it is possible that I can cook while there, the call of the evening dinner in a lovely pub may ring out to me - where is good to eat? What shouldn't I miss? Local delicacies.

And drink, what do the Welsh make in terms of wobbly-pop? Or non-wobbly-pop if you must.

depends what you mean by "north of Cardiff".

do you mean like Cathays, Llandaff, Maindy or Whitchurch?

or are we talking real wild stuff north of the M4?

Real wild stuff I reckon, as I am to stay north of the M4.

Cheers for the Orange head-up Trim - they seem quite good out in the sticks, I have a spare Orange PAYG sim for this very reason! Good to know I won't have to pick up another one.

What kind of cheeses are we talking here? What's the "most Welsh" cheese you're aware of?

Will check out "brains" - I think I've had Double Dragon before, it's stout right?

"Bring the beers, I'll make you some Welsh cakes on the bakestone."

This sounds like a good deal to me. What do you have with Welshcakes? I hope it's clotted cream.

If you make it as far as Swansea I'd suggest the mumbles Mile :)

(I wouldn't suggest making sheep jokes in the last pub you visit.... gawd knows how I got out of that one in one piece!)

Swansea is a little too far Chuck.

Will be avoiding jokes about sheep while there. I thought it would be wise.

Any really good places to eat out in the wilds? Aside from Trim's house that is...?

For cheese I'd recommend Y Fenni. Lovely!

some lovely countryside within reach, depends on exactly where you're staying though!.....St. Fagans, the Museum of Welsh life is near Cardiff, and well worth a visit, really interesting, a glimpse into the past!....

Orange was the network of choice when I lived in Wales so can vouch for that. Can even get reception on top of Snowdon!

Mmmm welshcakes, I want some now! I have mine with butter.

I can probably safely say that lamb is plentiful ;D

Y Fenni (the welsh name for Abergavenny for some SW trivia!) is nice. Abergavenny has a lovely outdoor swimming pool if you're feeling brave!

As for wobbly-pops, I'm more of a Fosters and lime kinda girl (cheap date!) as I don't drink beer.

I think you should also indoctrinate yourself into the ways of being a Welsh Rugby supporter, see the light Spare, see the light ;)

The Mumbles is lovely if you can get that far. I love Tenby too, great boat trips in the summer and they (used to at least) combine them with cove BBQs but a fair bit further on than Swansea.

Cardiff Bay has some nice places, bur does depend where you will be staying, I grew in Caerphilly, which has it's own castle if you're into stuff like that (some of the Doctor Who's were filmed there :) ) xx

Oh, agree with St Fagans and Big Pit is also good (ok, it's a...errr...big pit but an interesting one!).

Oakwood is the themepark but Alton Towers in aint!

Oh and Barry Island is a must!!! I haven't been back since I was a child so apologies if it's now a dump (whilst on that note, if in North Wales, give Rhyl a miss!).

Worth checking what's on at Cardiff Castle, they sometimes have outdoor events on in the grounds and it's lovely there!

Everytime I see a thread on any forum about Wales now I have to go and see how the pistonheads ambiwlans thread is doing.... it's still going strong after 4 years :)

If you get the time, go to Cowbridge, lovely little town, and eat at Bar 44, the tapas is to die for, the staff are really friendly and obliging, and the prices are very reasonable too!.............We love it!....sure you will too!....
